In the summer of 2018, I broke three ribs and discovered that when I paint, I move my whole body back and forth in big motions to lay down layers of paint, and that just wasn't possible with the pain in my side. But I have to paint -- I usually spend at least four hours a day at the easel -- so I sat at a table and began painting a few oils from scenes that inspired me. Most are smaller canvases, some just 10 x 10 inches. Their sizes give the paintings a certain whimsy and sweetness.
